Walmart Mainstays 4 Drawer Chest Recalled for Tipover RiskOver one million Walmart Mainstays 4 drawer chest products have been recalled over potential tip-over hazards.

The Walmart Mainstays 4 drawer chest products were voluntarily recalled over concerns about their entrapment hazards and stability, officials stated.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), "serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children" are linked to the Walmart Mainstays 4 drawer chest products from Ameriwood Home, especially if they are not anchored to the wall. Walmart stores have had almost 1.6 million products removed from sale, both in retail stores and in online markets.

A joint statement from Ameriwood Home and the CPSC also state that "[t]he chests do not comply with the performance requirements of the U.S. voluntary industry standard." If the products are also not properly anchored to the wall, the CPSC also advises and warns consumers to immediately stop using the chests.

The Mainstays dresser recall was issued after the CPSC received a report that a dresser tipped over onto a 4-year-old child, causing injury. The Mainstays dresser recall impacted almost 1.6 million units that were sold between April 2009 and May 2016. The dressers were purchased for about $60.

A free repair kit that helps anchor the device onto the wall and includes new feet for the chest is being provided by Ameriwood, a division of Dorel Home Furnishings Inc.

A class action lawsuit investigation has been initiated, looking for persons who own a recalled dresser and did not receive what they paid for.

The investigation was initiated because consumers purchase products expecting them to meet all safety standards; whether it has to do with a dresser or any other piece of furniture. Consumers, and especially parents to young children should not have to worry about potentially dangerous and deadly furniture in their homes. The CPSC asks of owners of these dressers to also immediately stop using them and to remove them from children's reach.

Some of the retailers where dressers have been the subject of recalls because of their potential for tip-over hazards include:

  • Amazon.com
  • BabiesRus.com
  • Baby.com
  • BabyUniverse.com
  • Ikea
  • JCPenney
  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Natart Juvenile
  • Furniture Kidz

Another recall was issued in September 2017 for the Target Room Essentials 4-drawer dresser. The Room Essentials dresser was implicated in 12 reports to the CPSC, in which consumers said the dresser fell over and collapsed. The falling dresser landed on a young child in at least two of the reported cases.

About 175,000 Room Essentials were sold at Target stores in the U.S. Dressers affected by the recall were sold from December 2013 through January 2016, and they retailed for about $118.
